PARTY // Crazy P Slated to Boogie at Cielo

November 4, 2011 @ 4:13 pm

NYC based Nervous Records, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, recently teamed up with SocietePerrier.com to present a series of events at Cielo in the coming few months. Next Tuesday, it’s Crazy P performing live and DJing in support of their new studio album, ‘When We On,’ followed by Parisian DJ/producer Norman Doray November 22.

Nurvous Records event (the disco arm of Nervous) is officially hosting the event and I’m thinking that it will be totally wild.  Record mates Ter Khan and Walker & Royce will open up the decks for Crazy P. The UK group has been making music together for 15 years, combining elements of house, soul and disco. In  2011 alone Crazy P released ‘Crazy P presents MTS Vol.1’ a two track EP of bangers directly influenced by their current tour schedule and ‘When We On,’ which the Cielo show will highlight.

Doors open at 10 pm, with  an open bar from 10-11 PM.  You can pick up early bird tickets here before Tuesday’s show. If all of this didn’t already sell you, there will be free Nervous candy all night. Done and done.

REVIEW // Alesso Hits Lavo

November 2, 2011 @ 8:14 pm

As expected, Alesso crushed Lavo on Friday following his opening gig for Kaskade’s “Trick or Beats” show at Roseland Ballroom. Now I know that Lavo is technically in the nosebleed section, but the venue is pulling some killer DJs and every time I’ve gone it’s proven more than worth the journey to see world famous talent in a personal setting. This particular party was even better due to the Halloween theme, which had the droves of un-costumed revelers adorned in light up devil ears. Also I was psyched to possibly hear more than just a preview of Alesso’s “Raise Your Head” which I wrote before that he had tweeted to his fans earlier in the week; I wasn’t disappointed and I got to enjoy the full length version, along with other bangers like Alesso’s mash up of Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on a Dream” and his own “Nillionaire,” which is gorgeous on its own.

The room definitely went craziest when he dropped his hit with Sebastian Ingrosso, “Calling,” which has become a lead track on many of the sets I’ve been hearing recently. Also, of course, we were privy to Alesso’s remix of Swedish House Mafia’s “Save the World,” which never falls flat. I’m excited to see what else Alesso does in the coming months. He’s only been performing since February, soon after Ingrosso discovered him back in their native Stockholm. Alesso is also friends with fellow young Swede Avicii, so I smell many future collaborative tracks between the (informal and rapidly growing) Swedish house mafia. Check out the one video I was able to capture of the mayhem!

CMJ Day 5 // SPIN & Rayban’s Flipout

October 28, 2011 @ 12:12 pm
When: October 22nd
Where: Chinatown
Who: A-Trak, the Rapture and Crystal Castles
Lucky ladies we are, we got to check out SPIN’s CMJ closing party, Flip Out: A Never Hide Concert, featuring performances by A-Trak, my current favorite band… The Rapture and Crystal Castles at a former firehouse downtown on Sat. Oct. 22.  Kanon Vodka kept everyone lubricated, with the only issue being the absurdly tiny number of restrooms available;  this seemed to be a theme for us in the past two weeks…
A-Trak was A-Trak and got the crowd hyped. Brooklyn-based band The Rapture  was simply amazing… had the crowd dancing, singing, maybe crying because they were so effing good.  This was the first time I’ve seen them live, and Im sure glad I did – they were def the highlight of my CMJ.  Then, I don’t know what it is about Crystal Castles, but the Canadian duo seem to inspire hardcore-like intensity from their fans, which spurned a mosh pit inches away from me. Alice of course crowd surfed to the demise of her band manager – her trademark move.
Thank you Spin & Rayban for the best CMJ event… you win!

CMJ Day 1 // Light Asylum & Class Actress

@ 12:07 pm

It took me about 3 days to recover from Creators Project —  just in time for CMJ.  My week kicked off with Light Asylum and Class Actress at Public Assembly.

Light Asylum

FADER describes them best…

Shannon Funchess has a powerful voice. She’s got extreme range, from brutally low and operatic to punchy post-punk. For “Dark Allies,” a track with Light Asylum other half Bruno Coviello’s Knight Rider-esque synth voyage as a base plain, she swoops deep and delivers an aggressive performance, just a touch sweet and just a touch scary…..Lit slightly purple by the horizontal growing lights set at the base of the stage, they were intense to watch, but that didn’t stop tons of folks from dancing wildly. Never has music this heavy inspired such serious grinding.

Class Actress:

Class Actress, the moniker for singer/ songwriter Elizabeth Harper, is probably one of my favorite bands of the moment.  The 80′s sounding synth-pop sensation just released her new LP Rapprocher, boasting hit singles such as “Weekend” and “Keep You” – and I am a fan.  Harper, who is commonly compared to Madonna in the 80′s, is effortlessly sexy with her breathy vocals and nonchalant attitude.  I’ve been listening to her songs on repeat literally all day every day.

You can read more about her on Phrequency and Mishka.
