SHOP // HOUS Introduces EDM Inspired Designs

November 14, 2011 @ 11:28 am

I have been documenting the meteoric rise in popularity of electronic dance music (EDM) and written a number of times about how EDM beats have thrust to the epicenter of NYC nightlife.  Now, Lavo’s Richard Wheeler is launching a brand that elevates EDM-chic beyond neon tank tops and furry boots, and provides beat-seekers with fashionable clothing perfect for a night at a club – or a festival weekend. Wheeler has been soft-marketing the line, HOUS, for a bit, but the website goes live tomorrow, finally making it available for cool kids everywhere.

HOUS’s Facebook page will function as a central resource for fans of the line. Everyone who likes the page is automatically entered into monthly swagger contests, ticket giveaways for HOUS events and various other freebies and goodies.  On Tuesday, November 22nd, one Facebook fan will win one of every HOUS T-shirt style; all you have to do is like the page to have a chance to enter.

Wheeler’s sartorial take on EDM is fresh, and already a plethora of familiar faces, from Steve Aoki to Calvin Harris, have sported pieces from the line. Do yourself a favor and be an early adopter for a fellow New Yorker, because HOUS is guaranteed to blow up.

What inspired you to start a clothing line?

If you like skateboarding, you have a brand to wear, MMA you have a brand to wear, hip hop… The list goes on, but what about EDM? The most exciting and fastest growing genre there is today. Think about it… There are no brands that you can go to share your love of the music. I found it incredibly frustrating and decided to do something about it. So I did.

Have you ever dabbled in design before?

Yes, most of my life since graduating with a degree in Fashion Design I have been involved in design.

Where do you get inspiration for your designs? Lavo patrons? DJs? Music in general?

It was standing at the door of LAVO that inspired HOUS. Inspiration comes from everything surrounding me: Music, DJs, friends, events, conversations; in one’s lifestyle always keep an open mind because ideas can come from anywhere.

Do you have any plans to expand the offerings of HOUS?

I already have a thousand ideas; it will be hard to stop me!

Have you partnered with anyone in the music business to work with you on HOUS?

I have been blessed with phenomenal interest and shared excitement by many people in the music business. I prefer to let time tell the story.

The big question: if someone is wearing a HOUS design, will they definitely get into Lavo? :)

Ahaha!! Doormen are complicated. It could only help right?

Any one DJ that you would love to have wear a HOUS design?

I’m going to have to give you a rubbish and boring answer here! But a true one: there are so many DJs I like for their style and sounds, it cannot be just one.

If you could collaborate with any designer, who would it be?

Something with Yohji Yamamoto, Vivienne Westwood would be fun; that’s a party! Converse would be right for footwear; I have a few ideas so watch this space!

GO // Nitehawk Cinema Serving up Films & Booze

November 11, 2011 @ 9:48 am

Finally, someone realized that movie theatre food generally blows. Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg has now appeared like a dashing knight to save us from movie doldrums, offering victuals far beyond what you can find at your local Loews, and, ready for it…in theatre booze. Thanks to a new law enacted by New York State (and also due to the efforts of Nitehawk owner Matthew Viragh) movie theatres can now serve alcohol in the theatre. At Nitehawk, they deliver it right to your seat. This is a fully upgraded version of the BYOB action I engaged in back in ’06 when I brought a 6 pack to “Brokeback Mountain” and almost cried myself to death.

Nitehawk’s current movies include “The Ordinary Skier,” “Solitaire,” “The Rum Diary” and “Drive,” but the options change often. I checked out “Ides of March” and Ryan Gosling was thoroughly enjoyed alongside hummus and a bowl of cracked black pepper and parmesan popcorn. Yum yum on all counts… Other refreshments include tater tots or French fries with queso (delectable if indulgent), a veggie or regular burger and mac and cheese. You can check out the full menu here. Also the theatre switches up specials based upon the movies, for example right now you can sip on a rum punch or daiquiri with rum minatures and nibble on rum raisin bread pudding to complement your journey down to rum land with Johnny Depp.

Ticket prices are reasonable, $11 for adults and $9 for kids and seniors. Be sure to hit up the 4-7 happy hour during the week, when well drinks and drafts are half price. If you can’t make it after a long workday, there is a weekend brunch menu from 12-4 that includes a drink. Can’t beat that.

Nitehawk is essentially the perfect date place; finally you can mix dinner and a movie into one. Also there is only one table for every two seats, so you’ll feel extra cool that you arrived a deux.

PARTY // Crazy P Slated to Boogie at Cielo

November 4, 2011 @ 4:13 pm

NYC based Nervous Records, which is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, recently teamed up with SocietePerrier.com to present a series of events at Cielo in the coming few months. Next Tuesday, it’s Crazy P performing live and DJing in support of their new studio album, ‘When We On,’ followed by Parisian DJ/producer Norman Doray November 22.

Nurvous Records event (the disco arm of Nervous) is officially hosting the event and I’m thinking that it will be totally wild.  Record mates Ter Khan and Walker & Royce will open up the decks for Crazy P. The UK group has been making music together for 15 years, combining elements of house, soul and disco. In  2011 alone Crazy P released ‘Crazy P presents MTS Vol.1’ a two track EP of bangers directly influenced by their current tour schedule and ‘When We On,’ which the Cielo show will highlight.

Doors open at 10 pm, with  an open bar from 10-11 PM.  You can pick up early bird tickets here before Tuesday’s show. If all of this didn’t already sell you, there will be free Nervous candy all night. Done and done.

REVIEW // Alesso Hits Lavo

November 2, 2011 @ 8:14 pm

As expected, Alesso crushed Lavo on Friday following his opening gig for Kaskade’s “Trick or Beats” show at Roseland Ballroom. Now I know that Lavo is technically in the nosebleed section, but the venue is pulling some killer DJs and every time I’ve gone it’s proven more than worth the journey to see world famous talent in a personal setting. This particular party was even better due to the Halloween theme, which had the droves of un-costumed revelers adorned in light up devil ears. Also I was psyched to possibly hear more than just a preview of Alesso’s “Raise Your Head” which I wrote before that he had tweeted to his fans earlier in the week; I wasn’t disappointed and I got to enjoy the full length version, along with other bangers like Alesso’s mash up of Empire of the Sun’s “Walking on a Dream” and his own “Nillionaire,” which is gorgeous on its own.

The room definitely went craziest when he dropped his hit with Sebastian Ingrosso, “Calling,” which has become a lead track on many of the sets I’ve been hearing recently. Also, of course, we were privy to Alesso’s remix of Swedish House Mafia’s “Save the World,” which never falls flat. I’m excited to see what else Alesso does in the coming months. He’s only been performing since February, soon after Ingrosso discovered him back in their native Stockholm. Alesso is also friends with fellow young Swede Avicii, so I smell many future collaborative tracks between the (informal and rapidly growing) Swedish house mafia. Check out the one video I was able to capture of the mayhem!

PARTY // Alesso: From Sweden to Lavo, with Love

October 27, 2011 @ 2:27 pm

Now that the party is not on a Thursday, I can finally justify traveling uptown Friday to check out Alesso at Lavo. Part of the Swedish House Mafia extended family, Alesso is a breakthrough producer who recently released the smash hit “Calling” with mentor/co-producer/SHM member Sebastian Ingrosso. Yesterday Alesso tweeted out a new preview for his fans entitled “Raise Your Head” which, even in short form, sounds pretty awesome.  He will also be opening for Kaskade at Roseland on Friday, but Lavo promises to be a more compelling and intimate experience in my opinion! Get up there if you can for sure, Swedish themed costumes appreciated (meatballs anyone?)
