SHOWS: Darling Cait at Union Hall

October 6, 2010 @ 12:24 pm

My dear friend, and amazing singer/songwriter, Darling Cait performed last Thursday night, headlining Union Hall in Park Slope. A lot has happened since we last saw Cait at her Ella residency. She came out with a hot single… She wrapped up her new album which is about to drop… She has a new band – which came about one fated night at Cabin (Down Below)… She has added to her collection of toy instruments… And well, you get the point.

She was brought out to our neck of the woods to share the bill with Rabbit!, a fantastic band from Mount Dora, FL whom she has gone on to do commercial writing with, and funnily enough- met awkwardly at one of Rachael Ray’s house parties – random I know. As a girl about town, Cait’s following usually includes a few noteworthy folks in attendance- longtime supporter Jeff Ross and came to see her at Ella last fall, and this time was no different as Reggie Watts, Seth Herzog, and Michael Zegen (Rescue Me) were all in attendance, clearly loving her music on toys and visibly wowed by Cait.Darling Cait alongside her ‘boys on toys’ – Tommy Eichmann (Alexa Ray Joel/formerly of The Crash Moderns), John Badamo (Alexa Ray Joel) and Matthew Rubano (Patrick Stump/formerly of Taking Back Sunday), is truly one of a kind with a playful yet statement-packed, multi-genre approach– paving the way in her own indie niche. What can only be described as a nostalgic twist of bubblegum pop, Caitlin croons catchy tunes reminiscent of decades before us, that feel cozily familiar, yet refreshing and hot all at the same time.

The show kicked off to an electrifying start – literally – when toy piano-man Tommy Eichmann was plugging in all the toy instruments, the silver-keyed ivory mini organ with knobs like skittles, sent sparks flying. While Caitlin’s act might be somewhat of a novelty, her substantial talent is anything but. This girl can not only sing, but writes her original music on TOY INSTRUMENTS! With catchy tunes like “D-A-Y-D-R-E-A-M” “Never Say Never” “Whisk Me Away” “Catch Me (If I fall 4 u)” and my personal fav, “I May Be Pale (But I’ve Got Soul)”, myself, along with everyone else who gathered at Union Hall, couldn’t help but fall in love and sing along!
