Everything you need to know, 14th street and below

Good Bye: Black Betty… It’s been really real.

June 9, 2009 @ 4:02 pm

Don’t forget everyone… Black Betty in the Burg closes its doors Monday, June 15th. BB was was one of the first bar / performance space/ restaurants to open in Williamsburg over 10 years ago. That must be some sort of record. This will be one of the first North Brooklyn’s “early gentrifiers” to be driven out of the neighborhood due to rent increases. Pasquale Pescatore, the building owner, says he gave BB a chance to renegotiate their rent, but ultimately the property was rented out from under their feet. It’s sad when an already gentrified neighborhood is becoming even more gentrified…As soon as I see a chain restaurant (besides subway and tasti – I can deal with those two) come in, my ass is out of there.

Word on the street is Danny Tanner (The Real!), owner of the old Pighs and Thighs and chef at Egg, will be taking over the landmark. Hopefully, he will keep some of key traits that made BB so successful. Good music, good vibe, and cheap drinks.

It’s a sad sad day. Come pay your respects to Black Betty and pour one out.
Rev. Vince Anderson and His Love Choir will play the final concert.
