GO // Nitehawk Cinema Serving up Films & Booze
Finally, someone realized that movie theatre food generally blows. Nitehawk Cinema in Williamsburg has now appeared like a dashing knight to save us from movie doldrums, offering victuals far beyond what you can find at your local Loews, and, ready for it…in theatre booze. Thanks to a new law enacted by New York State (and also due to the efforts of Nitehawk owner Matthew Viragh) movie theatres can now serve alcohol in the theatre. At Nitehawk, they deliver it right to your seat. This is a fully upgraded version of the BYOB action I engaged in back in ’06 when I brought a 6 pack to “Brokeback Mountain” and almost cried myself to death.
Nitehawk’s current movies include “The Ordinary Skier,” “Solitaire,” “The Rum Diary” and “Drive,” but the options change often. I checked out “Ides of March” and Ryan Gosling was thoroughly enjoyed alongside hummus and a bowl of cracked black pepper and parmesan popcorn. Yum yum on all counts… Other refreshments include tater tots or French fries with queso (delectable if indulgent), a veggie or regular burger and mac and cheese. You can check out the full menu here. Also the theatre switches up specials based upon the movies, for example right now you can sip on a rum punch or daiquiri with rum minatures and nibble on rum raisin bread pudding to complement your journey down to rum land with Johnny Depp.
Ticket prices are reasonable, $11 for adults and $9 for kids and seniors. Be sure to hit up the 4-7 happy hour during the week, when well drinks and drafts are half price. If you can’t make it after a long workday, there is a weekend brunch menu from 12-4 that includes a drink. Can’t beat that.
Nitehawk is essentially the perfect date place; finally you can mix dinner and a movie into one. Also there is only one table for every two seats, so you’ll feel extra cool that you arrived a deux.
