EAT // Frozen Treats Grace the East Village

July 27, 2011 @ 10:49 am

We are in the throes of summer, causing unnecessary bouts of fatigue and a serious lack of appetite. Two spots in the East Village have an answer to this humidity induced affliction. People’s Pops joined NYC Icy this week as the latest pop-up cold treat storefront to serve the sweaty throngs.

NYC Icy hung out its shingle a few weeks ago in a former sushi restaurant located at 100 Avenue A, just below 11th Street. The treats graced the East Village last year, and this year continues the feud between nearby Ray’s Candy Shop, the wholesome purveyor of icies and frites. Given that it’s the EV, loyalties and tempers run high, but the flavors being offered at NYC Icy are innovative and delicious. I indulged in a Mango Basil combo, and it kept me afloat for the two-block walk to my apartment, and I don’t doubt that the other flavors match up. This shop will likely become more permanent, as it becomes the in-house dessert of incoming restaurant Badburger.

People’s Pops officially opened on Wednesday, serving familiar treats to those who frequent the outposts at Brooklyn Flea and Chelsea Market. The stand is located at 118 1st Avenue (at E. 7th Street). Their pops feature fruits procured from the Greenmarket daily, so expect the selection to be outstandingly fresh.  The Pops are conveniently located next to Caracas Arepas Bar and Luke’s Lobsters, so if you are still hungry you can have your entrée post-dessert. My roommate tweeted yesterday “Omg! Red Plum Basil ice pop from People’s Pops on 1st and 7th just saved my life #delicious,” so I would certainly hightail it over there before they close up shop!
