ART // FriendsWithYou in NYC
FriendsWithYou, a multi-concept art company, has just arrived in Manhattan with two amazing (and adorable) installations.
Created in 2002 in Miami by Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandovol, FWY was formed to bring once-in-a-lifetime experiences to the people. Along with countless installations and exhibitions (including permanent work at MOCA), they have created products and images for clients like Nike, Coca-Cola, Target, Red Bull, Harajuku Lovers, and more.
This week marked the arrival in NYC of two FWY projects; one on the ever-evolving High Line, and one on Bowery at The Hole NYC.
First up: The High Line. This week has been a zoo over by The Standard with the arrival of KAWS (more on that later) but climb up the steps away from the madness of the MPD, walk down The Highline 10+ blocks (voyeur tip: you can see a ton of amazing apartments if you walk along the edge), and enter Rainbow City. Presented by AOL, Rainbow City is located in The Lot (underneath the end of The Highline) a space that will be used for rotating events and currently features 5 awesome food trucks (Coolhaus & Red Hook Lobster Pound to name a few). Walk under an arch that says “Wish Come True” and you are immediately surrounded by giant, inflatable, movable sculptures… a playground for kids and adults alike.
Its a very cool experience to be in the middle of something that is a cross between Candy Land, Alice in Wonderland, Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory , and Super Mario Brothers. Take in the sights then grab a lobster roll and beer from The Lot On Tap (a new project from Top Chefs Tom Colicchio). The experience combined with the walk along The Highline provides for a fun and different afternoon.
Meanwhile, down on The Bowery, FWY has set up shop inside The Hole NYC (a gallery with very interesting rotating shows) for a show simply called “
” (how Prince-ish of them). The show is a collaboration with Native Shoes, a company with whom FWY is collaborating with on a series of pop-up shops.
Both installations are definitely worth checking out and even if this isn’t the art you’re accustomed to it makes for a cool experience… and some very cool photo-ops.
