The Williamsburg Word: Brokelyn’s Car Service Price Check

February 28, 2010 @ 12:00 pm

Brokelyn put together this amazing price check of all the different car services in The Burg, I had to share it.  Glad to see Metro is the cheapest…I always use them if I can’t flag down a yellow guy.

Our latest car-service price check brings us to Williamsburg, where we compared the fares for six different companies.

As with last time, we called car services like anyone else would and asked for quotes on three different destinations. With a hypothetical starting point at Bedford Avenue and N. 12th Street, we asked for fares to: 1) to Lafayette Avenue and Ashland Place in Fort Greene, 2) to Delancey and Allen Streets on the Lower East Side and 3) to JFK Airport. We called each car service within a 20-minute span on an early weekday afternoon. We also compared rates with those of a metered yellow cab. Here’s what we found: Read the rest of this entry »

Downtown Style: Theory Now Goes Where You Go

February 27, 2010 @ 12:00 pm

by: Nora Giglio

Theory

Drum roll please. Theory has finally launched their ecommerce site! What’s the big deal you may ask? Not only are we expanding our market, but we are reaching homes in the US who don’t have access to our stores or lines in department stores. We’re worldwide baby! Taking a quick trip to Singapore? Bangkok? Maybe even a rainforest? Pack the laptop and hookup that WI-FI cause Theory.com goes where you go. Kind of like a little puppy. There may even be a toothless Joe six pack in Alabama who’s been saving his pennies for a Marco (our classic suiting shirt) that he needs for the next big shotgun wedding. Joe, it’s you lucky day. Put those pennies on a pre-paid card and log on to Theory.com; you’ll be the best dressed lad in the county.

Remember Fashion Insider and all the looks created by celebrity stylists? Well you’re automatically an insider a click away. Our genius crew made it easy for shoppers to be inspired by each stylists looks without having to come to the Gansevoort store. Clearly a biased opinion, I’m not ashamed to say. But who wouldn’t want to come and see the flagship giant set up so beautifully? So maybe you’re feeling unmotivated or just not close enough to my store. Good news! At Theory.com you can watch the video of the stylists dressing the model while you’re watch at home in bed! Better? Yup, you’re a bum. It’s ok—own it, live it, love it, and SHOP it.  Because in theory everyone’s an insider.

Now if this site doesn’t motivate you to shop and improve your level of fabulosity, I don’t know what will.

The Williamsburg Word: Bye Night Owl, Hello Kingdom

February 26, 2010 @ 12:08 pm

via Racked:

A while back I told you about Brooklyn Royalty – who through a party at Cameo Gallery for the Tatted Book launch.  Now, BK Royalty is setting up shop bar shop/bar.

BK Royalty

Formerly Oulu, currently Night Owl, the bar space at 170 N.4th Street will morph into its newest iteration around April 1st when Bob Bland, founder and designer of local streetwear brand Brooklyn Royalty, turns it into Kingdom.

The shop will showcase Bland’s own collection of denim and hand-screened sportswear while remaining a full service bar.

Though running a bar seems like a pretty daunting task for someone who distresses denim and designs tee shirts, Bland will have help from Geoff Weber, the current proprietor of the location. Together they will keep the multi-leveled, unique and already cozily-appointed space booked with various events and exhibits.

Bland says via email that she “was really inspired by all the inventive bar/boutiques that [she] visited during trips overseas to Hong Kong, Tokyo and Mainland China. It’s really a great concept for Williamsburg. What’s more fun that drinking while you shop?
We’ll see how this works out… Fab or fail?

The Dirt: Word on the Street

@ 6:50 pm

Word on the Street

Scott Sartiano and Richie Akiva’s transformation of the old Nells/Plumm spot is almost complete.  Steve Lewis gave Chichi212 a tour. Apparently is going to be a game changer.  Def looking forward to seeing it *cough cough Steve* [Chichi212]

Kenmare isn’t even open yet, but word on the street is it’s already in trouble with the SLA.  [NYDN]

The Dizzy Fizz reports The Jane Hotel (Ballroom) is set to reopen March 1st after being shut down, Scott Solish begs to differ. Only time will tell who’s right and who’s wrong.  [The Dizzy Fizz]

Gramercy Park’s Hotel Marcel is opening a new subterranean lounge by the name of Polar. Recently used as just storage space, Polar looks like Santa’s house if he happened to live in the Meatpacking District. [Gothamist]

EVERYONE is talking about Mike’s Apt, Eater and Village Voice recently just outed the exact location *LAME* I’m one of the lucky few who actually know Mike and the loft is sick. There is also not one, but two.  This is not the last you’ve seen or heard from the Mysterious Mike and the crew behind the parties- Big things poppin. [Gawker] [Eater] [Blackbook] [Village Voice]

Black Market (Above Cabin Down Below)  is the new ‘IT’ place. Jesse Malin is now a nightlife heavyweight.  [GofaG]

My friends Adam Aleksander and Carol Sharks are officially nightlife leaders. Congrats guys!  [NBC NiteSide]

NightLIFE: Introducing The Kenmare

February 22, 2010 @ 10:04 pm

Kenmare Lounge

In the midst of fashion week hysteria, I missed the moment we have all been waiting for!   The Kenmare, the new restaurant and underground lounge brought to you by nightlife heavyweights, Beatrice Inn’s Paul Sevigny AND Rose Bar’s Nur Kahn *Double Whammy*, is unofficially open.   And although Sevigny told Grub Street,  “It’s not a new Beatrice… there’s never going to be a new Beatrice. We never planned for there to be a Beatrice. Beatrice is not a franchise.” I think it’s safe to say, Sevigny’s following will be following him to Kenmare, making it the “next Bea.”

The new Nolita hotspot played host to the after parties of Prabal Gurung and Proenza Schouler last (fashion) week, and will continue only host private parties for the next three weeks until it officially opens next month. *Be prepared to hear that anyway, even when it’s open.*

According to Urban Daddy, who got the first inside look, “It may look like any gilded, dimly lit speakeasy diner at first, but you’ll descend into a cavernous underground space decked with red leather banquettes and mottled stone columns that look like they were taken from an Egyptian tomb.”

Looks hot! I’m excited to go!!!

NYFW: Toni Fransesc F/W 2010

@ 6:46 pm

Toni Fransesc is another designer to def look out for. The collection was hot – I would wear 99.9% of everything that came down the runway. The theme and name of his collection was ‘Artificial Life‘ and the show captured that to the fullest.   The show itself was quite interesting, most shows have this upbeat feel with electro dancey music – well not this one.   The music was the sound of a heart beat with random metal clanking sounds and the models slowly paced the runways with stiff and somber looks on their faces, black bobs, and gold lipstick.  Very robotic and futuristic.   I liked it.
