Oh What A Night: BangON! vs. Shindig

January 31, 2010 @ 8:14 pm

Oh where to begin… the naked girls, the free booze, the fire department, the ravers, and the overall basement party goodness. Last Saturday, BangOn and Shindig through a rager.  Not your typical New York City rager. A straight up basement party throwback rager, complete with a floor filled with beer sludge, DIY makeshift bar, glowsticks, and overall debauchery.  This was my first Bang On party and will definitely not be my last.  As I was on my way over, I got word that the fire department was about to shut it down…but I went anyways, and although at capacity I was able to squeeze my way in.  Apparently there were 4 fire trucks there ready to shut that place down.  I caught the tail end of the noyesno and two performances.  One being a mime who somehow inserts himself in a balloon aka the lice Chinese economic bubble  It was pretty nuts.   Oh! and there was swing in the middle of the crowd…ya know.  normal.

A picture us sure worth a thousand words, so I’ll let the pics do the talking.

15 Minutes of Fame(whoring): The Smoking Ban

@ 5:17 pm

Enough is enough already.  Eff you NYT who started this whole situation.   You would think they were allowing prostitution and open drug use in these clubs…

Yes, smoking in clubs IS illegal and most venues DO ignore the ban.  I almost think some people think its even cooler to smoke inside now that it’s illegal because it adds more ‘mystique’ and makes them more badass.

Do I smoke? No.  Do I hate coming out of clubs reeking over it? Yes.  Does it bother me that much? Not really.  After 6 years did people just start lighting up inside? No. Am I sick of reading about it every single effing day? YES.  Let’s be real, some places have ignored the ban since the beginning. Or better yet, you couldn’t smoke inside until after midnight when the clubs started getting packed.

Like really? Is the the main priority of media and the NYPD?  I am not saying this is NOT a problem or issue, but I think in NYC there are better things to be talking about and ‘cracking down’ on.  Like teenage prostitution, commercial sexual exploitation and domestic trafficking.   I think an organization like GEMS would appreciate the help.

Interior by the Manhattan Inn designers is similar in appearance. Intelligencia coffee is expected.”  They will also be selling their own variety of pastries – can’t wait to see what they come up with!

The Williamsburg Word: St. Anselm Opening Soon

@ 2:27 pm

Lotta Burg news these days… and all right in my little pocket of the hood.  I just saw this today and wondered what was going on there.  Very exciting!

via Eater via Off The Presses

Joe Carroll, the man behind Williamsburg drinking emporia Spuyten Duyvil and Fette Sau, is close to opening his third, slightly-hard-to-pronounce Brooklyn drinkery, St. Anselm.  St. Anselm, located right next door to beer bar Spuyten Duyvil, at 355 Metropolitan Avenue, was supposed to open last November, but has been delayed. Carroll said he expected it to be unveiled next month.

St. Anselm will be more food oriented than its neighbor. “It will be a mix of high-brow, low-brow stuff. We’re doing burgers and dogs and also doing old school diner, blue-plate special things.  A lot of offal, a lot of organ meat dishes, and a pretty sizable wine list. We’re trying to do something simliar in wine to what we do at Spuyten Duyvil with beer.”

They’re be a diner with stools in the space. A peek inside revealed a charmingly roughhewn look made of hand-cut wood, creating wavy, layered designs on the ceiling and a kind of country-fence look along the counter.

Thanks for the tip!

Artist on the Rise: DΔRK+DΔWN by Tyler Durtschi

@ 12:00 pm

Every so often I head over to LA to visit my BFF and fellow fashionipster, Jess and her crew of lovely friends.  Jess and co. all work in fashion, live in Echo Park/ Silver Lake, *AKA Williamsburg of the West with slightly more attractive people* live the life, and pretty much party like its 1999 every day of the week.  Good mother-effing times. During my last visit I realized everyone was wearing these really rad necklaces. They were very different and kind of unusual.  Not one person had the same one on – you can tell they were all made by the same designer, but they were all a little bit different. I had to have one – I was obsessed.

Well come to find out, these necklaces were made by the one and only, artist Tyler Durtschi under his new jewelry venture, DΔRK + DΔWN. Tyler is a babe and one of the nicest guys I’ve ever met.  His jewelry line is sick and is going to be the new hot shit.  GUARANTEED.  DΔRK+DΔWN’s style is so simple yet so amazing, each piece combines geometric shapes delicately juxtaposed with different, stylized textures and patterns.  Each piece is made personally by Tyler with heart and soul.

His site and line just officially launched for public consumption yesterday so get it while it’s HOT.  His price list has not been release yet, if you are interested in purchasing a piece please email him directly for a custom quote: info@darkanddawn.com

Here are two of my faves from his 2010 collection:

The Williamsburg Word: Introducing Cupcakeland

@ 7:00 am

Isn’t it shitty when you have a Birthday party or something and you want to get cupcakes – but you have to go in to the city to get them and it’s a big fat pain in the ass?  Well guess what my little Burger-bee’s, we just got our own official gourmet cupcakery, Cupcakeland, which opened up in the old Catbird spot.   Word on the street is this place can give Crumbs and Magnolia a run for its money.    The interior of Cupcakeland looks like my dream apartment – decorated in all black and white damask with touches of hot pink – super cute.  Hopefully Cupcakeland will have the same success as their neighbor Saltie, and hopefully I won’t get 10lbs living around the corner. Cupcakes are reasonably priced at $2.25 ea. and $25 a dozen; they serve coffee and tea as well. The Green Tea and Mocha are def on my To-Do list.  I will report back with my findings.

Dear Diary: I Summered at The Jersey Shore *GASP*

January 26, 2010 @ 5:32 pm

Pics coming soon!

In 2004, A&E brought us ‘Growing up Gotti’  and introduced the world to the blow out, orange skin, and ‘guidos.’  I am not going to lie, I was in to it.  I wanted to find me a nice juicehead guido.  I was living in Jersey at the time and guidos and guidettes were running rampant, once summer hits they all go one place, and that place is the Jersey Shore *or Neptunes AKA ‘Tunes in the Hamptons.* Five years late on the trend, MTV and the Jersey Shore cast reintroduced the world to guido culture – which happens to be quite popular in all of the Northeast.  Being Italian, and living in New Jersey for a few years, I know a thing or two about fistumping, battling to house music, and GTL. You might have never guessed it but this Billyburg chick has spent some serious time down the shore and I am going to have to rep it for a minute.

I just graduated college and I really wanted to a shore house in Belmar *where real guides go, PAH-LEASE, no one goes to Seaside unless you are 18 or white trash.* I couldn’t rally enough people on my own, and found a sick house on Craigslist.  So there I was, in a house with 18 strangers all from Westchester and Jersey. If someone filmed our house, I guarantee it would’ve been way more interesting than the shit we are seeing now.   We had many roommate hookups, we had one guy dating another guy in the house’s sister, which in turn means we had many fights, we had a drug dealer, we had a random 35 year old who tried to regulate everyone, we went to Djais and Headliners every night, and although no hot tub, *because no one actually does* we had lots of drama.

If you plan to head down the shore this summer and observe these creatures in their element – here is a list of some some basic Do’s and Dont’s.

Do:

  • (Gents) Add an ‘ey’ or an ‘ie’ to your name, especially if you’re a guy.  ie: Joey, Mikey, Pauley
  • (Gents) Rate the looks of people on a scale of 1-10
  • (Gents) Roll down to the shore in style
  • (Gents) GTD – Gym Tanning Dinner, or better yet BGD – BEACH Gym Dinner (Real shore-goers actually go to the beach, not tanning! Well, unless its raining. then its fake-n-bake time)
  • (Gents) Rock a faux-hawk
  • Go to Belmar, Point Pleasant, or Manasquan
  • Go to DJais, Headliners (Sat night only,), Jenks, or maybe the Osprey.  Surf Club and Tiki for day drinking.
  • (Ladies) Flatiron or pomp your hair.  Kim Kardashian curls will work too. (Don’t forget the fake eyelashes!)
  • (Ladies) Wear Bebe, Guess, or even Forever 21.  Tight and short – always good.  Boobs out – a must.
  • Get your picture taken by NJGuido.com or TheHotshotz
  • Practice your best guido shuffle before heading down.
  • Bring plenty of cash with you.  Shots of Patron are not cheap.

Don’t:

  • (Gents) Give yourself a bogus nickname like “The Situation”
  • (Gents) Refer to people as grenades or catastrophes, that’s just ridiculous.
  • (Gents) Tattoo the brand of your car on your body.
  • (Gents) GTL – who does laundry down the shore, that is unheard of.
  • (Gents) Rock a blow out
  • Go to Seaside – unless you are 18 or live in a trailer.
  • Go to Karma
  • (Ladies) Get bleach blond highlights if you are in fact a brunette
  • (Ladies) Wear anything that remotely resembles Ed Hardy
  • Film your own reality show.
  • Dance barefoot at clubs, or bang on the dance floor.  That’s (A) nasty and (B) straight trashy.
  • Work at a ‘Guido’ T-shirt shop.

Do yourself a favor…
